Day 1: Arrival – Antigua Guatemala

Meet & greet at la Aurora Internationa Airport by Birding Expeditions staff and transfer to the colonial city of La Antigua Guatemala.

Day 2: El Pilar Farm Birds, Butterflies & Pacaya Volcano

Early transfer to San Cristobal el Alto for birding and breakfast with a fantastic view of the Fuego, Agua, and Acatenango volcanoes.

After breakfast, transfer to El Pilar farm for an encounter with butterflies, the hummingbirds of Guatemala, and other neotropical bird species.

After the el pilar Birding and nature tour, transfer to La Antigua Guatemala, to have lunch, then you will be transported to the entrance of the active Pacaya volcano.

From here, you will start hiking to enjoy the natural phenomena of the Pacaya volcano.

After this fantastic adventure, you will return to your lodge in Antigua Guatemala

Day 3: Antigua Guatemala to Dry Scrub Forest

Following breakfast, you will board a vehicle towards the dry scrub forest of Guatemala.

On the route, you will discover the obsidian deposits used during the Mayan times.

Finally, you will arrive at the lodge for check-in and lunch; after a short break, you will visit the dry scrub forest to spot some birds and the cacti of this biome.

Day 4: Heloderma Reserve – La Aurora International Airport – Flores Peten

Early transfer to the reserve for the conservation of Heloderma.

The sanctuary inhabits 90 diurnal butterflies, 22 varieties of grain moths, 100 species of birds, and ten amphibians, including the endemic salamander species (Oedipina motaguae) and the stream frog (Clugastor inachus).

Among the 42 Reptiles documented standing out are the Guatemalan beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum charlesbogerti) and the Motagua Spiny-tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura palearis).

Also, seven types of bats, 160 arthropods, including the endemic scorpions (Centruroides fallasisimus and Diplocentrus motagua), and the striped tiger-like tarantula met (Davus sp.).

After the tour, you will be transferred to La Aurora International Airport to take a flight to Mundo Maya International Airport at the arrival transfer to your hotel.

Day 5: Las Guacamayas Biological Station

After breakfast, we will head to Las Guacamayas station, located inside the most extensive wetlands in Central America, on the banks of the San Pedro River in the heart of the Mayan Biosphere.

During the transfer, we will have breaks for wildlife observation.

Arriving at Paso Caballos village, we will get a boat ride for about 45 minutes of wildlife observation on the route.

After check-in, we have a short hike ending at Las Guacamayas lookout with fantastic views to enjoy the sunset

Day 6: Las Guacamayas Biological Station

Early wake up to discover the birds and wildlife around the station, then breakfast.

After breakfast, you will board the boat for a short ride before starting a jungle hike to discover the natural world around the most significant wetlands of central America.

Return for lunch.

After lunch, a boat ride around the San Pedro river and Sacluc stream on the quest for more wildlife, including the colorful Agami Heron.

Before dinner, you will enjoy a nocturnal aquatic boat ride around the San Pedro River and the streams

Day 7: Las Guacamayas Biological Station – Tikal Nationa Park

After breakfast, you will board a boat towards Paso Caballos and then by car to Tikal National Park; lunch on the route.

At your arrival time for check-in, you will start a hike inside this natural paradise to enjoy a wildlife exploration and a sunset from the top of one of the Mayan temples.

Day 8: Tikal National Park

With early birding and nature tours, we have an excellent opportunity to discover the birds that inhabit Tikal and Howler & Spider monkeys, butterflies, and fantastic insects.

Breakfast at the lodge.

You will continue our wildlife expedition in and around the archaeological site with a Maya history explanation and the opportunity to climb some temples.

Return to the camping area for lunch and a short break; you will have time for a nature walk in the afternoon.

Dinner and lodging in Tikal.

Day 9: Tikal – Guatemala City – Lake Atitlan

Early transfer to Mundo Maya International Airport to take a flight back to Guatemala city.

Meet and greet by our staff.

Afterward, you will be transferred to your hotel in Lake Atitlán to check in.

Then, you will start a cultural tour by visiting colorful villages around the lake; this is an excellent opportunity to discover the Mayan Culture.

Day 10: Lake Atitlan – Los Tarrales

Early morning boat trip towards San Pedro La Laguna, the place to get a pickup truck that will bring you into the access of Paquisis volcano.

Here we are going to start our hike in search of Horned Guan and various exciting bird species.

Prevost’s Ground-sparrow, Amethyst-throated Hummingbird, Slender Sheartail, Rufous Sabrewing Violet Sabrewing, Bushy-crested Jay, Olive-sided Towhee.

Also. the Chestnut-sided Shrike-vireo, Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Mountain Trogon, Bar-winged Oriole and Ocellated Quail among others.

Afternoon transfer to Tarrales, check-in, and time for a hike inside the reserve.

Day 11: Los Tarrales – Guatemala City

A nature tour inside Los Tarrales, This excellent bird watching location inhabits resident species, for example, Azure-rumped Tanager, White-bellied Chachalaca, Yellow-naped Parrot.

Also, Tody Motmot, Rufous-breasted Spinetail, Prevost’s Ground-Sparrow, White-eared Ground-Sparrow, White-faced Quail-Dove, Ruddy Quail-Dove, Emerald-chinned Hummingbird, as well as others.

Late transfer to Guatemala City.
